The Boy and the Glass of Milk

A boy receives a full glass of milk; years later a life is changed. Where did you first hear this?

Summary

A poor boy, footsore and hungry, knocks at a stranger's door hoping for a crust. Instead a kind young woman gives him a tall glass of milk. Years later, as a physician, he recognises her as a patient and writes across her medical bill: 'Paid in full with one glass of milk.'

Full anecdote

The boy had walked farther than his shoes could bear. When he stopped at the door of a modest tenement to beg a scrap of bread, a young woman answered and, seeing his face, brought him instead a full glass of cold milk. He drank it slowly, thanked her, and went on his way.

Years later, in a great hospital, a physician was called to a difficult case. When he read the patient's name he remembered her at once. He gave the case every care, and when the final bill was drawn up he wrote across it: 'Paid in full with one glass of milk.' — Signed, the doctor.

The story is most commonly attributed to Dr. Howard A. Kelly of Johns Hopkins. That attribution is difficult to verify and does not appear in Kelly's own writings that we have located. Contributors are invited to cite the earliest printed version, in newspaper, tract, or sermon.
